Roll-out strategy of 5G smartphones in 2020 remains unchanged
Beijing, March 19, 2020 — Xiaomi Corporation (“Xiaomi” or the “Group”; stock code: 1810) reported its measures to combat the COVID-19 outbreak at an online meeting in China.
Wang Xiang, President of Xiaomi, said the Group took immediate action to set up a prevention and control team after the first case of human-to-human transmission was confirmed. The Group also introduced a series of initiatives to combat the spread of coronavirus, provided assistance to the needy, maintained normal business operation and resumed production. In addition, the roll-out strategy of 5G smartphones this year remains unchanged.
None of the 2,000 staff members in Wuhan infected
Xiaomi has established a comprehensive mechanism for epidemic prevention and control, ensuring zero infection among its 2,000 employees in its Wuhan office as of today. The Group has provided all necessary materials, and financial and legal assistance to its supply chain companies. As of today, an 80% work resumption rate of supply chain has been achieved, ensuring the launch of Redmi K30 Pro to go smoothly on March 24 as scheduled.
President of Xiaomi, Wang Xiang said, “At the beginning of the outbreak, the whole industry turned still and quiet. Now, we all hope something positive can come out of this difficult time, which is why we decided to hold the product launch in February and show our determination to resume working. We believe the halt in production has affected results in the first quarter, as smartphones are essential devices, but the trend of a phone switch brought by 5G development is unstoppable. When the COVID-19 epidemic is contained, there will be a surge in demand for our products. We have not changed our 5G product launch strategy, and we expect at least 10 new 5G smartphone models to hit the market this year.”
While maintaining the launch schedule of its products, Xiaomi has also provided necessary supplies to assist the work resumption of its supply chain, including masks, protective suits, thermometers and disinfectants to factories. It also sought the consent of local authorities on an earlier work resumption schedule. In addition, Xiaomi has provided cash incentive and financial assistance to help relieve the cash flow faced by its factories, as well as accelerate the recovery of production lines and capacities.
Donating supplies to counter the pandemic
Xiaomi has also taken proactive measures to make a massive donation of medical supplies to some affected areas around the world. In China, Xiaomi has donated a batch of supplies including Xiaomi Mi Pads, thermometers, smart washing machines to hospitals based in Hubei Province, and has made cash donations to various charity funds and organizations. Leveraging on its logistics edge, the first batch of materials successfully arrived in Wuhan on Chinese New Year’s Day (January 25).
During the past two weeks, Xiaomi has also provided donations to some European countries to curb a shortage in the countries’ health materials. The first batch of several tens of thousands of FFP3 face masks to the Italian government have been delivered and distributed to the severely affected Veneto Region. Donations of medical supplies to France and Spain also came in a followup.
On March 16, a batch of anti-epidemic materials, organized by Xiaomi and Wuhan University, arrived in South Korea, including 200,000 surgical masks, 100,000 N95 standard masks, 10,000 protective suits, and 10,000 protective masks.
Prioritizing safety and wellbeing of employees
Xiaomi has also taken multiple steps to combat the spread of the epidemic in all Mi Stores. As of March 19, more than 1,800 Mi Home and Authorized Mi Stores in Mainland China had reopened.
To ensure sufficient protection for frontline staff, Xiaomi has delivered a total of 234,000 face masks, 1,277 bottles of disinfectant, 7,402 bottles of instant hand sanitizer, 1,366 boxes of disposable gloves, 2,121 packages of disinfectant cotton and 1,270 thermometers to our stores so far.
Xiaomi has also paid close attention to its foreign employees and staff based in overseas offices. The Group immediately implemented measures to guarantee their health and safety, including a travel control, a self-quarantine policy and the provision of protective materials.
